Born in Central Falls, RI, son of the late Henry and Anita (Houde) Berard, he resided in Lincoln before moving to Cumberland in 1967. He attended Saint Matthew's school followed by Saint Ray’s Academy. He then attended Assumption College and graduated with a Bachelor's of Business from Bryant College. Michael was the brother of Eileen (Robert) Fagundes of Cumberland and Jeannine (Robert) DeCocco of North Smithfield. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Michael was a generous and selfless person, who would always put his family before him and offered help to others in any way he could.
